Is Nara Japan worth visiting?
I think Nara is worth a half day just to see Todaiji.
It is a much larger and older temple than anything you will see just about anywhere in Japan.
A stroll through the deer park and some of the shrines can round out a longer day trip.
If you want to see history and temples, Nara should be on your list..

Personally, if I had to choose, I would stay in Kyoto. You’ll save money staying in Osaka, but you’re adding a whole lot of hassle and tiring days to your trip that you don’t have to. I’d even stay 1 night in Osaka, have your night there without the worry of getting back to Kyoto.
